Starting in Player Development -Intentionality Pays Off When Networking

BE INTENTIONAL!

When you are reaching out to those in the player development field, please be intentional.

This blog is part four of the five part Starting in Player Development series. In this blog I am discussing the third action one must take to position themselves to get in the player development role.

The fourth step is: Being Intentional

I spoke about this in part one: do not reach out asking them basic questions found in the professionals’ bio on the team website or LinkedIn. LinkedIn, team websites and other social media platforms give you more than enough information on the person you want to reach out to. These professionals' messages are completely full of people like yourself wanting to learn about player development. Being intentional will help you get ahead of the basic generic questions these professionals are asked every day.

I listened to the Craig Groeschel podcast, and he talked about a worker who would always come in and only used less than 5 minutes of his time when asking questions. He began to trust her because he knew she would value his time. You can do the same type of thing when looking to network and begin working in player development.

I did this when meeting Bo Porter in a coffee shop, I asked him one question in a Starbucks, and he became an immediate mentor. That was based on me asking ONE QUESTION. You may want 50 to 60 questions answered but the person you are connecting with may have only time to answer one question. Make sure you are intentional with the time you get with the professionals who are opening up to you.

Part five of this blog series we will talk about following up.
