Starting In Player Development - NOBODY CARES, Until You Have A Plan.

I am passionate about athletes and their well-being. I am passionate about what happens to them when they are done playing. I am passionate about them, understanding they are more than an athlete.

WHO CARES!

That may seem harsh, but it is true. No one cares about your passion for athletes if you don’t have a plan.

This blog is part two of the five part Starting in Player Development series. In this blog I am discussing the second action one must take to position themselves to get in the player development role.

The second step is: Create A Plan

Now the emotions have settled as you read the opening. Let’s get to the lesson today in getting you into a player development position.

If you’re passionate enough about player development, you will eventually have a conversation with some decision makers. They are talking to you because of your passion, so when you are engaging them, they are listening to plans that you would put in place. They are listening to see if this passion has created anything which tangibly helps their athletes.

This plan can and should consist of what you’re most passionate about. Examples: community impact, career development, mental health, mentoring, academic excellence, etc. Wherever your passion falls, create a plan to enhance the experience of athletes from there. Dive deep into this area and this area alone as you prepare to share your plan, the other things will come, and people tend to only remember one thing you said anyway.

Part three of this blog series we will talk about understanding the value you provide immediately to a player development department.
