Season Two of The Player Development Pod is complete. Season Two was a massive success because of the guests who came on the show. I would first like to thank them for taking the time to come on and share with us their experiences, expertise and passion for this space. Thank you Lamonte Winston, Dr. Lacee’ Carmon-Johnson, Tony Hull, Chris Smith, Darien Harris, Alexander Martin, Tobruk Blaine, Syndric Steptoe, Tony Washington Jr, Ashley Goodman, James Sherman, Andre Sims Jr, Dr. Lori Robinson and Gus Felder. These guests were special to me because I wanted to highlight some of the amazing professionals who are doing the work in the player development space. I admire and have great respect for these individuals and the impact they have and continue to make in the world of sports.

If you’re familiar with The Player Development Pod and our social media accounts, you would be familiar with the #3 Takeaways post I have done with each of our guests. (CHECK LINKS BELOW.)  Well I wanted to take some time and share my #3 Takeaways from Season Two of The Player Development Pod:

  1. There is deep support in the player development/athlete development space. The ability to bring elite guests each episode is one example of this. I have gotten to know these in circles where we have come together to help each other in this space. Be it a Zoom call, a physical conference or reaching out and connecting. One thing that was common with each episode is every guest gave a shoutout or talked about how they’ve been impacted by someone else in this space. When you think about that it’s truly incredible, in a society where some may point all their success to their efforts EVERY and I mean EVERY guest talked about how someone influenced them personally and professionally. If you’re new to this space and looking for a support system, just reach out, I promise you will find the support you need.

  2. The guests saturated us with waves and waves of advice. Advice about life, the profession, the role and how to find success. I purposely created an advice section in each episode to help the listeners gain wisdom. The guests were asked their advice for those in the role, best overall advice they’ve received in life and a practical nugget they can share for those in this space. The guests did not let us down as they gave us quality advice for our lives.

  3. The guests gave a variety of self-care tips. This part of the podcast was more successful than I thought it would be. I strategically placed it as the last question for the conversation because prior to this each guest talked about what they achieve in their role. I knew from being in this role previously that many of them impacted their programs or organizations outside of the athletes. This can literally be heard in every episode as well. So after all these awesome initiatives, projects and achievements they’ve created in their role through their responsibilities, how do they take care of themselves? From working out, to watching movies, to reading and even to building Legos we were given many ways to create a release from work. The cool part for me doing these interviews live was each guest was prepared with their answer. Each guest talked about why this was their avenue of self care and each guest talked about the importance of this in their lives. Now I would be lying if I said I had a self-care routine before asking the guests, but since the interviews I have improved my self care routine. If you need help in this area please go listen to this section of the podcast for a start, our guests have great starting points for you.

Because of the success of Season Two and the guest format, I will continue to interview those who work in player development in future seasons of the show.

Season Three Preview

Season Three will begin in January. I will begin season three with a series called the Head Coaching Guide to Player Development. There’s a lot of transitioning happening in college football as head coaches will begin hiring player development positions in January, February and possibly March. I am creating a series to help head coaches understand player development and the impact it can have on their program. After that series I will begin a series interviewing those who provide services to player development. Those individuals and companies who help the person in the player development role through programming. After that I will begin a blog series where I talk about some of the blogs I've written about player development. We’ll lead into more player development conference episodes as we get closer to that date. I saw on Instagram 95% of podcasters don’t make it to 50 episodes and we will be able to do that in Season Three.

The Player Development Conference

In the last blog I announced that I will be hosting a player development conference in spring 2023 (https://www.btfprogram.com/blog/the-player-development-conference). I am super excited and will continue to share details about the conference during Season Three of this podcast.
