Gus Felder - 3 Takeaways
Creating and producing the Player Development Pod has been a great joy for me. I spoke in detail about this in a blog post. (https://www.btfprogram.com/blog/10k-plays-what-ive-learned-about-podcasting)
Season One’s purpose was to provide education and insight into the player development profession. Season Two’s purpose was to highlight those who do the work in the player development space. There are many different titles these guests hold, but the common denominator is they all help enhance the lives of athletes.
I have enjoyed getting to hear the work these incredible professionals provide for those under their influence. One thing I’ve done personally for my growth is take away three things from our conversations. I’ve shared these takeaways on social media but wanted to expand the reach of these gems by bringing them to the blog space.
This #3Takeaways blog highlights Gus Felder. Here is a link to our conversation: https://youtu.be/F1gogLOZ5Js
Enjoy the below takeaways.
3 Takeaways From Gus Felder
1. Work With Different Types of People
When asked about player development advice, Gus quickly said he would advise people to get experience working with different types of people. This is critical in player development as your dealing with many different personalities, communication styles and backgrounds.
2. Listen
In discussing the biggest lesson he learned in the role, Gus shared listening was imperative. As he stated you don’t always have to have the answer, the players just want someone who will listen to them. Maybe the next encounter you will be able to give advice, but that opportunity can’t happen without the player’s trust that you have listened to them.
3. Develop Yourself
Gus shared that I’m all the transitions he’s made in his career, he sets himself to master the role. He reads articles, looks for certificates, and listens to podcast. Anything that will help him in the role. Learning is pivotal to being impactful in a role.
