Fall Camp - Tip Three - DO NOT Forget Your System of Checks

FALL CAMP has begun, and this is the beginning of the most pivotal time for your team before the season.

This blog is the third of a blog series where I will be sharing my fall camp player development tips from my time in the role.

TIP #1: Stay on top of the daily schedule.

TIP #2: Check on ALL the newcomers

TIP #3: Have a system of checks.

Fall camp is slowly coming to a close. You, the players, and the staff are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. You finally feel like you can breathe. What you may not realize is this is just the beginning. The season and school year are walking in as fall camp is walking out. To be best prepared for the coming requirements you need to set up a system of checks while you are still in camp. Below are the top three check areas you need.

1.    Driver’s License

a.    I learned this from one of the PREMIER Directors of Operations in all of football, Tory Teykl. At Houston after the 10th day of camp, Tory told me to make sure we were good on licenses as the season was coming up. It was my first year in college football, so I did not truly understand the importance, but she reminded me we needed them to travel to games. This was a valuable lesson I kept with me throughout my career. Make sure you make time to take care of this with your players during camp.

2.    Housing

a.    Most college leases end in late July/August and guess what starts in August…FALL CAMP! The players will not always be forthcoming with the need for them to move in a timely manner. Unfortunately, during my career I would be informed on the morning of a practice by players. That is not a fun conversation with the Head Ball Coach, if anyone was wondering. I made sure that never happened again. You need to do the same, create this list in May and make sure players have a place to move to.

3.    Academics

a.    My last tip deals with the start of school, so I will not give too much away with this one. But make sure you are taking time with your academic team to square away practice conflicts, mini-mesters and any other pertinent actions needed. Do not wait til the end of camp, make time to start the school year off on the right foot by supporting your academic staff.
