Fall Camp - Tip One - Know The Daily Schedule

FALL CAMP has begun, and this is the beginning of the most pivotal time for your team before the season.

This blog is the first of a four part blog series where I will be sharing my fall camp player development tips from my time in the role.

TIP #1: Know the daily schedule.

In July, there are fall camp meetings where the staff goes over detailed information needed for the successful implementation of practices, film, lifts, meals and so much more. These meetings can be all day and be for an entire week. Usually when everything is squared away, and the Head Coach has approved everything, the Chief of Staff or Director of Operations will meet with the staff and hand out a fall camp manual. This can be a packet or three ringed binder and will always be sent with a digital copy as well. This packet gives priority information is the authority on what the team will do every second of the day. Being on top of the schedule given to you is imperative in the player development role. I would put it in my written calendar, in my work digital calendar, my personal calendar and on my board. I even shared the document with my wife so she would know my schedule for the next month. IT REALLY IS THAT SERIOUS. If you are off schedule during fall camp, your entire day can be done before you figure out where you are supposed to be.

With that said, changes happen frequently during camp. The Head Coach may tweak some things, the weather may dictate the day’s schedule, or the availability of players may influence the day. No matter what happens, make sure you are on track for the day’s schedule. When changes were made during camp, I would annoy people until I got the updated schedule. This was important to me because I would be communicating changes, updates, and the reason for such to the players and in some cases other staff members who had a role with our players. The best way to describe the way I went about each day was, when I walked in, I looked at the schedule provided to me in the fall camp packet and then I checked with our operational staff to see if any changes were made. In all the fall camps I was a part of the schedules in the fall camp packet did not matter after about 10 days. The changes will be inevitable, but you must make sure you are on top of the schedule for that day in fall camp.
